Glayton Melo | 3rd degree Black Belt

Learn Authentic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu directly from someone who lives the tradition of the martial art.

Born in Brazil, Professor Glayton started his journey in 2000 at the legendary Nova União. As a Black Belt, competitor, and former SWAT officer, he brings over two decades of battle-tested, and real-world Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to Raleigh.

His step-by-step methodology replaces brute strength with leverage and practical mechanics: you don’t need to be a fighter to learn real self-defense.

We understand your concerns. Here are the answers to our most common questions:

Am I too old to start BJJ?

Absolutely not. We have students stepping on the mat for the first time in their 40s and 50s. Because BJJ relies on leverage and mechanics rather than brute strength, you can train hard and safely at any age. Go at your own pace.

Do I need to be in shape to train?

You don't get in shape to start BJJ; you start BJJ to get in shape. It's totally fine if you need to take breaks during your first few weeks. We will build your stamina up naturally in a highly supportive environment.

Is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu dangerous?

It's the safest full-contact martial art in the world. There's no striking (punching or kicking). If you get caught in a submission, you tap out, reset, and go again. Safety and respect for our training partners are non-negotiable rules here.

Do I need previous martial arts experience?

Zero experience is required. Everyone remembers their first day. Our Beginner Classes will walk you through the very basics—how to fall safely, how to move, and core techniques—step-by-step from day one.
